Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Custom headstone dimensions must conform to each New Jersey cemetery's individual regulations. Our design process begins with a regulatory review for your specific cemetery — confirming permitted heights, base configurations, and any imagery restrictions — so that the custom design we develop together will be installable without modification.

Foundation Requirements

Custom headstones in New Jersey require concrete foundations prepared by our installation crew to the receiving cemetery's specification. Foundation depth and method are confirmed as part of our standard regulatory review.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Many New Jersey cemeteries, particularly faith-affiliated institutions, carry rules about acceptable imagery for custom headstones. NJ Headstone Shop is familiar with the practices of Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Orthodox cemeteries throughout the state and confirms all imagery details with your cemetery before finalizing any design.

Our Collection

Our Headstones Collection

Custom Headstone

A custom headstone from NJ Headstone Shop is a one-of-a-kind commission designed entirely around the person being remembered. Our artisans work with families throughout New Jersey to develop designs that capture who a person was — their faith, their service, their passions, their relationship with the land and the people around them. Portraits carved in deep relief on black granite. Celtic knotwork borders surrounding a traditional Irish blessing. A sailor's compass rose flanking the name of a career merchant mariner. Wildflowers native to the New Jersey highlands framing the dates of a naturalist. Every element is hand-carved by our Morris County artisans using tools appropriate to each detail — pneumatic for broad shapes, hand chisels for the finest passages. All custom headstones are produced in upright, slant, and flat formats as appropriate to the cemetery's requirements and the family's preference, and all are built to cemetery-compliant specifications confirmed before production begins.

Granite Options

American-made granite in several varieties forms the material basis of every custom headstone at NJ Headstone Shop. India Black — our most commonly requested stone for custom work — offers a consistent dark surface that makes portrait etching and fine lettering particularly legible. Mountain Gray provides a classic neutral backdrop that suits any design tradition. Dakota Mahogany, with its warm reddish-brown crystalline character, adds organic energy to nature-themed and traditional designs. Our Morris County showroom holds sample slabs of each variety.

Custom Design Process

Custom headstone design at NJ Headstone Shop begins with your reference materials — photographs, sketches, religious imagery, personal symbols, or a description of what matters. Consultations are conducted in English, Russian, or Polish, at our Morris County showroom or by phone. Our design team produces a scaled drawing of every element for your approval before any carving begins. The stone is not touched until you are certain the design is right.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Six stages guide every custom headstone through NJ Headstone Shop's workshop. First: the family consultation, where we gather every detail about the person and the design. Second: the scaled design drawing, produced for your approval before production begins. Third: granite selection and preparation — American-made stone is chosen for the specific design requirements and inspected before carving. Fourth: hand-carving — our artisans execute the design using pneumatic tools and hand chisels, with the approved drawing as the constant reference. Fifth: finishing — letter fills, polish, and inspection against the approved drawing. Sixth: installation — the stone is transported to the cemetery, a foundation is prepared by our crew, the stone is set and photographed. The installation image is sent to your family as confirmation of completed work.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“I wanted my grandmother's headstone to include the garden she kept for forty years. NJ Headstone Shop's artisans carved irises around the border of the stone that look like they could have grown in her yard. Every time I visit, I feel her presence in the most specific, personal way.” — Laura, Union County NJ
